Friday Fun! from Humble Quilts

I've lost track of my days so snapped this photo quickly this morning.
It needs a good pressing!

I do like this better with the string border.  Not sure what comes next.

Many of you suggested a plainer, narrow border before adding the strings. I didn't have a solid red in the FG hue, but wasn't feeling the love on this one.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

We got off grid for a couple of days this week. If you aren't on my Facebook group you can be! It isn't super active but I ...

Basket Case String Block from Humble Quilts

This basket block has been on my design wall waiting for inspiration.

So I made a string border and don't like it at all.

Then I played around with another fabric. Still not loving it.

I do adore the border fabric, just not like this.

Then while in bed I had a thought.....

Maybe what I really don't like is that first border. So far I like it with the string border first.

I'd love your thoughts- please chime in!

The next few photos are from the last few days. We have been having a horrible inversion- ...

A Basket Case from Humble Quilts

I've got some more houses cut and managed one more little one to add to my collection.

I had some French General strips and decided to use it as a border for the string basket. I'm planning on adding to it just not quite sure what. I'm on the road teaching string quilting so maybe I'll get more inspiration for this basket.  Any ideas or suggestions are welcome!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Little Quilt and Baskets from Humble Quilts

Here's Janny's little quilt made from my "new old quilt" You can see it HERE. Each version is so adorable!

When I did my Bounty of Baskets workshop last month one of the ladies (I am so sorry I cannot remember who brought them) shared her string baskets from a class she took in Sisters.

Because one of my workshops is Bounty of Baskets and one is String Quilts Your Way I was inspired to make a string basket!!

I hope I can spice it up a little a liberated style border. It falls a little flat for ...

Fun with Strings from Heart Desire Creations

Time to try to empty the 1 1/2″ string container a bit. I really enjoy string quilts, although it is a LOT of sewing. I chose to do a block with a focused center. Each block is 8 inches finished. I drew the center piece on paper and used it for a pattern to cut out from a black with white polka dot fabric that I’ve had forever. The center was then placed in the center of each block, corner to corner. Hint: I used a glue stick to set the center piece on each foundation block. No ...

Stringin' Along from Humble Quilts

It is so fun to see all varieties of String Quilts!

Laura, I need you to contact me at humblequilts@gmail.com please.

I think I mentioned the class was held in the hotel I was staying at. Super convenient!

I didn't show Kay's blocks because it wouldn't have made any sense. Kay, if you are reading this, please send me a photo of your 1930's reproduction string quilt!

She made these from the ties that go around jelly rolls, etc. Super cute!

The maker of these cute blocks was going to make a table runner ...

Fun on A Friday from Humble Quilts

Here is a little string quilt that my friend and student from WA completed from the class at the end of February. (I have some terrific photos to share from class in Idaho!)

I had a long road trip and this book, read by Tom Hanks, was so good! He is such a great reader!

Barb Veddar put together a proposal for a special exhibit at the New England Quilt Museum- "The Legacy of Gwen Marston" and 2 of my quilts were accepted!

Blue skies can fool you into thinking it is springy- it was cold!

Quilt swap partners will ...

Stringin Along on A Friday from Humble Quilts

Here are a couple of finished from the String Quilts class from the guild in WA last month,

This entire quilt finishes about 19"x21".
Someone had commented that EPP would be hard to do but she pieced it! She used the eye spy template to do the strings. Isn't that darling?

I really want to make one of these now!

Good job Laura.

Bobbi made this sweet wheelchair quilt.

It has pockets too lined with flannel to keep your hands warm.
That is really wonderful!
If anyone else wants to share projects they did in class I'd ...

String Quilts Your Way from Humble Quilts

What a fun class we had on Wednesday in Ferndale, WA.
It was called String Quilts Your Way

I give them the basic techniques (there are more than one, like most of quilting) and they make a string quilt they'd like. I give them plenty of examples ahead of class.

Busy quilters!

So many fun varieties!

Traditional with reproductions.
Plaids and dots.

What a fun variety of greens.

Anything goes! It will be great!

A quadrant of this block was already completed and she was doing a great job with the Y seams.

Diagonal is always a great option ...

Starshine aka Strings Attached from Humble Quilts

Remember this quilt? It was made by me and published in American Patchwork & Quilting magazine in August 2021.
As I am preparing to be a vendor at a quilt show in January......

I've got solid starter packs to go along with the quilt. If you don't work with solids you may not have much of a variety. I hope these bundles will help other quilters.

I'm doing all of this by hand, including the cutting. Very grass roots! How do you all feel about that? Does it always need to be cut exact and super cutesy?

I ...

Holiday Hearts with a Twist - Dust Off a Quilt Book Blog Hop from Creatin' in the Sticks

Today is my stop in the
Dust Off a Quilt Book
Blog Hop
Hosted by Bea at Beaquilter.

So, here are my Holiday Hearts with a Twist.

The idea is for the hop is to find an old quilt book on your shelf and make something from it.

Here is my lovely:

The Thimbleberries Book of Quilts by Lynette Jensen
copyright 1995

This book was given to me by a friend from her mom's estate.
Her mom even put her name inside the front cover - so special.

The Holiday Hearts looked like fun - all strip piecing (love)!

Storm Sewing 2022 from Sew Karen-ly Created...

There's a snow storm outside, and I am sewing up a storm inside!  I always like to have a simple sewing project for storms, as our power often goes out.  String blocks are perfect, as they are easy to pick up again if you are interrupted.  I had a few sample blocks leftover from a class I gave at the Nova Scotia Fibre Arts Festival a couple of years back, so decided I would add some more to the pile.  I dug around the bottom of my Christmas prints to find some usable scraps.

These blocks are rectangles, and ...

Stringin' on a Friday from Humble Quilts

My friend Suzette sent me a photo of some "mindless" string blocks she is working on. Our hospitals are getting full to capacity with Covid patients and smoke has been heavy in the town she is in. She finds this kind of sewing is soothing and I agree!

I'll add that our governor has called in the National Guard to assist the local hospital. Not only are they shorthanded, but overwhelmed. I hope they get some relief from the added hands of the National Guard.

Here in Madras we have been relatively smoke free, which is so surprising. Nearby ...

Hands2Help, 2021 Comfort Quilts from Baby Boomer Quilting Bee

It's that time of the year again .... sewing machines are busy completing comfort quilts for the 2021 Hands2Help Quilt Challenge, hosted by Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  This is my 11th year participating and I couldn't be prouder.

With the Pandemic, I have a feeling this will be the largest collection yet.   Visit the Hands2Help 2021 page on Confessions of a Fabric Addict for a parade of beautiful quilts.

The six (6) quilts I donated this year, went to Emily, with Aunt Ems Quilts; for her charity Quilty Hugs for Happy Chemo.  A side note, Emily ...

Strings Attached from Humble Quilts

I'm happy to be able to share with you today that I have another quilt published in
American Patchwork and Quilting magazine.

Here is my quilt
"Strings Attached"

Used with permission from American Patchwork & Quilting magazine. ©2021 Meredith Corporation. All rights reserved.

I started the center of this when preparing for my string class via Zoom. I wasn't sure how the center block would be as a 12" block with strings.  I just loved it so much I continued to add to it! It is bright and vibrant and perfect for summer!

Used with ...

Wednesday Wonderings from Humble Quilts

Janny sent me a photo of her completed string quilt. She was inspired by THIS blog post and quilt that I started in a Gwen Marston class. So wonderful Janny!
If my quilts have inspired you to make a quilt I'd love if you would share that! That really keeps me motivated to blog and quilt!

Here's a little different string quilt from my friend Susan I love everything about this!! Here was her thought process:
